Selecting a senior living community for your parents comes down to a handful of questions — and it starts the moment you walk through the door.
First Impressions Matter
Observe staff warmth and whether they know residents personally. “Was the reception staff warm and welcoming?” sets the tone for evaluating facility culture.
Location
Proximity to family and essential services is important. Check whether pharmacies, restaurants, and theaters are accessible from the community.
Services and Care Levels
Facilities should provide support ranging from basic housekeeping to memory care and skilled nursing. Mental welfare checks and a staff that regularly interacts with your parents should not be considered a “bonus.”
Physical Space
Don’t compromise on adequate living space just for a convenient location. Sufficient bedrooms and bathrooms matter for your parents’ day-to-day quality of life.
Activities and Engagement
Access to dining, events, and entertainment supports mental wellbeing. Tours should include observation of available activities in progress.
Safety and Staffing
Critical requirements: CPR-certified staff, onsite nursing professionals, and coordination with your parent’s primary care physician.
Tour with your parents when possible, and stay in regular communication with staff after move-in to ensure ongoing wellbeing.
