If the money runs out

Medicaid can help pay for care once savings are nearly gone (in most states about $2,000 for a single person in 2026), but in assisted living it pays for care services only, not rent or meals, and many communities don’t accept it. Ask each community now whether it does.
Medicaid looks back 60 months at money given away or sold for less than it was worth. Gifts in that window can delay coverage.
A spouse who stays at home keeps protected savings (between $32,532 and $162,660 in 2026, depending on the state) and part of the income.
Veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for VA Aid and Attendance: estimate it.
Apply before the money is gone: approval takes time. An elder law attorney or your state’s Medicaid office can explain the rules where they live.
